Lib Dem Councillor Rod Jones joins protest

July 17, 2017 9:31 PM

Protest against dropped commitment to helping child migrantsAt 10.30 am Monday 17th July the Notts County Council Conservative leader of
the Children's Committee proposed a reduction in their commitment to
unaccompanied migrant children. Its effect withdraws Notts from helping
take a share of refugee children to save money. This is a politically driven
report.

Outside, a large number of people stood in protest. One speaker
denounced Teresa May reducing the commitment to take a few thousand children
to a few hundred. We heard from a lady who escaped Czechoslovakia in 1939 to
later find that all her family had died. She had been brought up by a Notts
family and has lived in the County since. She spoke forcefully about the
lack of compassion in this proposal.

Liberal Democrat Councillor Rod Jones previously made his dismay clear to
County Councillors and attended the protest outside County Hall. This
included many from all walks of life, Labour Party and Notts Refugee Forum.
