Manifesto for Rushcliffe Borough Council elections May 2019

  • Openness, fairness and equality of opportunity are our guiding principles.

  • Austerity cuts to public services have gone too far. They have gone beyond prudent use of resources. They have caused savage reductions in Education, Health, Police and Public Health and other services which affect the most vulnerable residents: children, those with disabilities and the very elderly.
  • Where there are choices, we value public services and looking after the environment.

If elected, Liberal Democrat Rushcliffe Councillors' commitments are to stand for:

A Greener, Cleaner Borough

  • Open spaces. Protect our open spaces and not sell off any parks under Rushcliffe's control.
  • Trees. Invest more in planting. Local planning policy should expect better tree planting.
  • Renewable energy and reducing climate change. Support more solar and wind power and energy saving measures in new and old buildings and carbon neutral standards for new builds.
  • Support ground and air source heating for new houses and electric car charging points
  • Waste Collection. Support new ventures available to Rushcliffe as we did with proposing the collection of household batteries. Demand that the next County Council waste disposal contract includes most plastics, food waste and special arrangements for LCD screens.
  • Walking and cycling. Promote safe routes especially in planning applications.
  • Bungalows. Look to improve the provision and protection of these in local Planning policy
  • Bedroom tax. We oppose this national penalty on the poor. We support more discretion in supporting the vulnerable.
  • Parks and Playing Fields. Improve and protect Rushcliffe's open spaces for everyone to enjoy.

A Caring Borough

  • Oppose cuts. Press for Government to undo its cuts to Public Health and Surestart. A Borough which invests in the future
  • EU losses. Campaign for Central Government to make up for the potential loss of EU funding for training schemes and economic development.
  • Farms. Campaign for Central Government to support small farms if EU support is lost.
  • Openness and accountability. Insist that public services are not outsourced other than to mutual social enterprises. Any new contracts should be made public. We need more openness. No hiding costs behind 'commercial sensitivity'.
  • Use income wisely and insist on no debt. Rushcliffe's high house values mean a large tax take.

Our Councillors will vote for and work to get these policies fulfilled as much as possible. You can rely on Liberal Democrat Borough Councillors to work hard for you, your community and Rushcliffe.
