Lib Dems call on Rushcliffe to build homes fit for the future - a Carbon Free Future
Liberal Democrat Councillor (Musters) Rod Jones called on Rushcliffe Borough Council to step up and take meaningful action to address their own Climate Emergency, declared in March year.
Cllr Jones put a motion to the Council:
"Rushcliffe is receiving a significant number of housing applications as a result of which house building is underway in the Borough at an expedited rate. Following the motion considered at this Council in March 2019 relating to the Climate Emergency, this Council calls upon Government to change planning policy to reflect the resolve to recognise the Climate Emergency and asks that a report be brought to the next meeting of the Council detailing what can be achieved locally now and by Government or other policy changes in the future."
This was watered down by the Conservatives to remove all but the call on Government to alter planning policy.
Rushcliffe Borough Council clearly did not want to scrutinise their own responsibilities with regards to Planning applications, choosing instead to focus on Government policy.
This is a missed opportunity for Rushcliffe Borough Council to step up and make a significant difference to the lives of Rushcliffe residents and home-owners, right now.
Most of the massive numbers of new homes, already approved, are unfit for the future - for a carbon neutral future.
It is time this Council pushed the boundaries and required developers to provide carbon neutral houses in the interests of the area and future generations.
Action should be taken here and if necessary policies adopted by this Council to ensure we do not leave an environmentally incompetent inheritance.
Rushcliffe Liberal Democrats demand better than ignoring the looming climate disaster that is coming.
