SURVEY OF WOKING'S NURSING HOMES LAUNCHED

Will there be enough nursing home places in the future for Woking's older people? Nationally, the number of care home places for the elderly has fallen consistently since 1996. There was a further loss in this last year of 10,000 independent, NHS and local authority places. In spite of projected increasing demand, the number of places in the southern home counties fell by 2.6% - which is getting on for twice the average for the country as a whole.

David Whiteing chosen to fight Danbury, Lt. Baddow & Sandon

There is to be a Borough Council by-election on November 11th for the Danbury, Little Baddow & Sandon seat, following the death of Cllr. Maurice Hurrell. Our Lib Dem candidate is a local resident, David Whiteing, referred to by some as 'Mr. Danbury'. David is fighting on three fronts: To inject some sense into the traffic system through the village, to fight inappropriate developments that threaten green space, and to fight for increased re-cycling to lessen the chances of a large waste plant at Sandon.

Carroll fights Post Office Threat

Shepway Lib Dem Peter Carroll is urging all residents to support his campaign to safeguard the Main Post Office in Folkestone. It has emerged that 270 of the 560 Main Post Offices in the country may be closed or sold off in new plans.

WOKING MP SILENT ON BLACK WATCH

In spite of a request from Dr Anne Lee to the Woking Conservative MP to ask for a vote in the House of Commons before British troops were sent out of UK control, he has not argued for this in the House of Commons. Dr Lee said "I would contend that this decision was not 'just an operational matter', it was a new and strategic decision. We have subjected our forces to a much increased risk.
