The Liberal Democrats are this week breaking new ground with the launch of their on line virtual conference to discuss ways to Britain-engage Britian's young people in democracy.
Paul Holmes MP for Chesterfield has today slammed the Government for yet another disgraceful attempt to deny thousands of people occupational pension compensation that could lift them out of poverty. In a letter to the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Paul Holmes has called upon for the Minister to urgently reconsider the Government's action.
Regrettably many MP's still talk like public school boys of the new term as if they were coming back to boarding school whenever Parliament begins a new session. Wednesday 15th of November saw the State Opening of Parliament and the Queens Speech (written of course by the Prime Minister), telling us what the Government plans to do for the next year. This is a 'top secret' document until read out by the Monarch- the details of which you could read in that mornings papers because Government spin doctors had been hard at work with journalists the night before!
On Saturday 18th November, as last year, I attended the launch event of this year's Santa Special on Chesterfield Canal at Tapton Lock. Great fun for children who in the run up to Christmas can meet Santa while having a canal boat trip. But also a good fund raiser for the fantastic team of volunteers who have given up so much of their time to reopen the canal.
Dundee Liberal Democrats have today (Sunday 19th November) slammed the Tony Blair Labour Government for failing on climate change.
The government is pushing ahead with plans to toughen up 23-year-old laws governing the treatment of people with severe mental health problems. Ministers want to amend rules to allow people with untreatable personality disorders to be detained even if they have not committed a crime. The new bill also suggests beefing up powers to ensure patients have therapy once they are back in the community.
